NHM SKY DIVING MOTHERS HELPING OTHERS COPE

Sky.jpg

NHM Mummas support each other daily, there is no judgement and the aim of NHM is to support Mummas as best as possible throughout the journey of motherhood. Both Bec Tansey and Mel Sargeant believe Motherhood has been their “toughest challenge yet”.

It’s for this reason Mel has decided to go against her better judgement and jump out of a plane to support women with Post Natal Depression.

Dr Rickie Elliott from Hummingbird Centre approached me and said I could help raise awareness for Mum’s doing it tough by jumping out of a plane. I said ‘No I don’t want to do that!’. Then I thought about how hard motherhood is without experiencing PND, and thought if I can help out I will, so I said “I’ll do it, if you come too”. Dr Elliott was silent for a little while on the phone then she said “Ok, but I’ll need some psyching up”.

Dr Rickie and Mel will be jumping for COPE’S (Centre of Perinatal Excellence) annual Fundraiser to encourage new parents to not suffer alone in silence, but to seek help and support early. Assuring them that the struggle is not a reflection of their ability and worth as parents.

NHM-I GOT IT FROM MY MUMMA’ s show released on 12th of November will be in support of Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Awareness (PANDA) Week, 11-17 th November 2018.

a1a5deba.png

Dr Rickie from The Hummingbird Centre in Warners Bay says the Perinatal period (spanning from conception to the end of the first postnatal year), is a time where new mothers and fathers are at significantly increased risk for onset and relapse of mental health conditions. Perinatal Depression (PND) a serious illness that affects up to one in five expecting or new mums and one in ten expecting or new dads. It is not widely known that indeed Perinatal Anxiety is emerging as even more common then PND and appears to equally effect men and women in the postnatal period. The two conditions frequently overlap.

COPE reports “Being truly healthy during this unique period in life means a woman must look after her physical and mental wellbeing, but too often the emotional and mental health challenges experienced during this time are overlooked, misunderstood and not spoken about. This can evoke intense feelings of isolation and shame, and worsen feelings of stress, depression and/or anxiety.”

NHM Newcastle Hunter Mummas - Mel Sargeant

NHM Newcastle Hunter Mummas - Mel Sargeant

The extent of these issues is revealed in COPE’s extensive research with over 1,200 women across Australia who have experienced anxiety and/or depression in pregnancy or in the year following birth. When asking a subsample of these women questions about their own emotional and mental health in their first pregnancy, low awareness of common mental health conditions was revealed with 48% of women in NSW indicating that they “probably had symptoms of depression and anxiety in pregnancy, but they did not recognise them”.

High expectations, shame and denial were also indicated, with 49% per cent of women surveyed from NSW stating that they “hid their true feelings from their family and friends”. The adjustment to parenthood is huge and we do not want parents suffering alone. Early identification and treatment means the conditions are resolved faster, families are supported and not isolated, with better outcome for developing children. Please talk to family, friends, your GP, OBGYN, mother’s group etc. The more we reach out and seek support we end suffering and make it easier for other’s to do the same.

REVIEW: A STAR IS BORN

Sizzle sizzle

Sizzle sizzle

Mummas I know it’s tough you don’t get a moment for yourselves but if you can call in a favour from a friend or your parents, anyone, do it, get the girls together and go and see ‘A Star is Born’ with Bradley Cooper and Lady Ga Ga.

I was lucky enough to see this movie at Event Cinemas Kotara in Gold Class by the way the menu there now is incredible add a glass of bubbles and this movie and that’s pretty much the best time I’ve had all year!

When Bradley Cooper and Ga Ga connect on camera it is electric. It takes you back to the very first time you fell in love with someone, the way the pit of your stomach just feel away, the universe disappeared and all that’s left was that person. The most incredible person you’ve met in your life. It makes you remember the urgency you felt to see your love again, the drunknes you felt gazing into each others eyes and the joy you took from life, just to be in the presence of someone you had that amazing connection with. Not to mention the sex.

That’s the magic of this movie it takes you there and it takes you on the crazy journey of these two characters who, both so brilliantly talented, shine in each others life and give that energy to the world through the music they create together.

Their story is beautiful, heartbreaking and inspiring and an absolutely incredible achievement for both actors. I can’t wait til you get to see it too! Enjoy the ride and be warned it finishes quickly and you may be still balling so don’t wear make up, it will run.

A GUIDE TO WINE TIME WITH THE GIRLS

domcherry-9069.jpg

If you’re anything like me, you have a couple of kids mine are 10 months and 2 and sometimes I don’t even know how I get to the end of the day. Especially when my 2 year has massive tantrums or they’re sick. If I finally manage to get them to sleep, it’s so incredible to just open the fridge door and see a beautiful bottle of wine there and sit down with my phone just scroll for a bit and enjoy a glass of wine. Like Bec I don’t really overdo it much these days but I enjoy a really quality drop so much more than I did in my younger years.

Lisa Margan from Margan Wine was lovely enough to join us this week on our show listen below but if you’d like a little guide in regards to her tips to wine and ours these were them.

HOW TO NAVIGATE A BOTTLE SHOP

A bottle shop can be daunting, there are so many wines to choose from, if you’ve had a wine you enjoyed in the past, write it down in the ‘Notes’ section of your phone. Also, if you’ve enjoyed a wine from a particular region and of a certain variety chances are you’ll like others from that same region.

WHAT TO DRINK WHEN

If you’re enjoying dinner with your partner a complex wine can be nice to enjoy together a big Shiraz if you enjoy big flavours with a meet dish, or if you prefer something a little more mellow, maybe a Merlot or Cabernet. For a chicken or meat dish try a Chardonnay or a Pinot.

If you’re having a BBQ a nice craft beer can be good (I know it’s not wine but we’re just saying) something like Stone and Wood Pacific Ale or Wild Yak Pacific Ale is very girly even Bright Ale by Little Creatures is nice too. A Rose also goes down wonderfully at a day BBQ or a Pinot Gris.

If you’re having drinks with the girls Pinot or bubbles, some great bubbles include Aussie brand Candon Brut, Grant Burge, Grandin (a good, cheap French drop) or Pinot Gris.

WHAT’S COOL

Lisa says and we sort of knew it New Zealand Sav Blanc is out. Rose is in as is Pinot Gris and reds that aren’t quite so big are in too.

Listen to our show below and get 20% of Margan Wine until the end of the week when you quote ‘NHM’ at the checkout plus free delivery. Go into the draw to WIN 12 bottles of wine from Margan by listening to the wine show below, just click on the link.

It's wine time ladies with Lisa Margan director of Margan Estate. How to find the right wine for the right occassion? What's cool right now and what's not so? Also how to taste wine, what to look for as hallmark features of a good wine.

SEXUAL ASSULT DIDN'T HAPPEN SAYS INVESTIGATION

Police were informed last week that a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in bushland after getting off a bus on the Pacific Highway near South Street, about 3.30pm last Wednesday (17 October 2018). These were the facts reported to Lake Macquarie Police District.

They then launched an investigation with the assistance of detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad. Extensive investigations, including forensic examinations and interviews with a number of people have lead them to believe this was a false report.

The alleged victim has been spoken to at length by police and offered support services.

Police would like to thank the community and media for their assistance with this matter.

Dr Phelps has been crowned an easy winner in the Wentworth by-election which means the Morrison Government has lost it’s majority in Canberra.

Dr Phelps is partying with friends and believers at the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club she just recently took to the stage saying:

"Thank you to the people of Wentworth for placing your trust in me,"

"I won't let you down."

She also thanked her wife Jackie and the supporters of her campaign, calling it a "David and Goliath struggle".

I don’t know about you Mummas but to me, this is a clear sign that we’re over politics. Not over being governed of course by people who care to represent us but over the absolute circus involved in ‘party’ politics these days. They legislate according to what may prove popular without proper plans in place, they are mostly on ego trips without giving a hoot about the actual people in their electorate and it all seems to be about who you can clamber over to get to be next in line for the throne. Let’s hope this is the beginning of a movement to end this ridiculous era in Australian politics.

YOUR FAMILY IS INVITED TO A CINEMA EVENT UNDER THE STARS

The Real Film Festival Newcastle in it’s seventh year

The Real Film Festival Newcastle in it’s seventh year

We should be so proud of our wonderful city. Newcastle is bursting at the seams with creativity and people doing exciting things. It also has a heart and a soul that is truely unique and one of it’s treasures now in it’s seventh year is The Real Film Festival running from the 26th til the 28th of October.

Special guest presenters this year include Academy Award nominated cinematographer, Don McAlpine as well as Zac Garred, a Newcastle-born actor who’s enjoyed great success here and abroad. Don’t think just because you’re a part time film maker or a cinema buff that’s always had dreams of creating your own work that these workshops aren’t for you, the truth is actually the opposite according to Real Film Festival Director, Annette Hubber.

“If you love filmmaking or just enjoying watching brilliant movies, seeing short stories, or spending an evening under the stars in an open air cinema, you can be part of the Festival.”

“The diversity of films this year is quite incredible, with a number of great local stories to tell. Stone Empire explores the Newcastle music scene, Brewtown uncovers the local craft beer industry and Hey Honey celebrates our local, amazing honey makers,”

On Saturday the 27th of October at Speers Point Park, families are invited to share the in the Festival excitement with a free open air cinema from 5PM! Screened will be Natalie Ritter’s short film about the race to saye her four-year-old daughter’s life then Cool Runnings will screen directly after that. There will be plenty of entertainment, food, drink and activities available on the day.

We have doubles to give away to The official Program Launch where you can enjoy Draytons Wine as well as beautiful canapés at the Culture Club on King Street, we’ll then walk down the road to the Tower Cinemas and take in an advanced screening of Momentum Generation, a story about mateship, passion and legacy in the pro surfing world and the complexity of their relationships with each other and their sport and after that you can revel in enjoyable conversation with like minded creatives at the Gala Party at Customs House Hotel. To win with NHM check our socials and to buy tickets for the event go here.

NHM'S TOP 5 SECRET FAMILY BEACH SPOTS

Newcastle Artist Mitch Revs

Newcastle Artist Mitch Revs

As the weather heats up it’s great to slip, slop, slap and pack the kids and the dogs in the car to head to the beach. We love it because Vitamin D in reasonable doses is so good for your mental health, especially as a Mumma who can often feel low when faced with hours on end inside the house, it tires out the kids so they sleep and it’s free.

If you’d like an alternative to Newcastle and Merewether Baths read on.

1. Thong Tree Beach, Swansea Heads

This beach is so brilliant. It often has not a soul on it and it’s not rough so the kids don’t feel intimidated plus there are heaps of super cool rock pools and your four legged friend is allowed to come too.

2. Pelican Foreshore, Pelican

Pelican is really beautiful and a really down to earth place to hang out. There’s usually plenty of parking and it’s calm so the kids can just paddle around. Watch the current though it can be really strong sometimes in certain parts so take care. Your puppy is also invited and there’s heaps of room to set up a tent or an umbrella.

3. Spoon Rocks Bay, Caves Beach

4. Beach Road, Wangi

5. Grannies Pool, Blacksmiths

Other cool spots (pun intended)

  • Gap Creek Falls, Watagans

  • Dobell Park, Wangi

  • Booragul

SHARK ATTACKS AT PORT STEPHENS

shark.jpg

A shark has bitten a man on his upper right arm at a Port Stephens beach, north of Newcastle. The man suffered minor injuries and is currently at the John Hunter Hospital. The 50 year old was in the water at Samurai Beach on One Mile Beach, near Anna Bay when he was struck just shy of 8am. It’s thought this was mainly due to the increased shark population with a whale carcass in the area. The team from the Rescue Helicopter said:

"He was stable and conscious when emergency services arrived … [and] the wound was treated and wrapped on the beach."

G'day Mate!

26f3135d-2cce-45a9-9e99-44c43d67fc9c_x365.jpg

The word mate… hmmmmm…. so much to say about this little 4 lettered word. Most commonly used to soften a conversation. Follow up a confrontation with ‘mate’ and it’s not quite as harsh is it? Or did you forget someone’s name? Doesn’t matter, just say ‘mate’ and you’re safe!

Buzzfeed said in an article that these are the ways mate is used:

  1. To say hello to someone

  2. To reference a friend

  3. To express excitement for someone

  4. To express disbelief

  5. To replace the phrase, ‘here’s the thing’ or ‘let me tell you’ when you’re about to drop a truth bomb on someone

  6. To warn someone that you’re annoyed with them

  7. To tell someone they need to chill

  8. To replace the phrase, ‘this guy’, in an affectionate manner

  9. To replace the words ‘bitch’ or ‘dude’

  10. To accentuate a stern conversation

  11. To disagree with someone

  12. To address someone when you don’t know or can’t remember their name

  13. To verbally shake your head at someone

  14. And to show aggression online

(Seriously though, how many times did you say out loud mate in these contexts)

But what about women? Can women use the word mate? I did a quick google search on this and found one website and their top rule on using the word, is that women must NEVER use it!

Tag a ‘mate’ that uses the word a lot!

THE MOMENT MEGHAN MARKLE INSPIRED A LITTLE AUSSIE GIRL

44112050_2224817204426163_6356348596450754560_n.jpg

Everyone swooped on them like seagulls eyeing off a tourist’s steak at one of those fancy restaurants that are normal but have huge price tags because they’re by the harbour.

Anyway our insider saw the most adorable thing, a  little girl wearing a t-shirt that read "Girls Can Do Anything". Meghan and Harry approached the little girl and complemented her on her shirt then said she was a dead ringer for Meghan as a little girl.

They didn’t say dead ringer but words to that effect. The little girl’s grandmother said not only were they inspired by Meghan’s life they were gobsmacked to see the photos of Meghan as a child and the resemblance to their little one Meghan said she "was literally about to say the same thing!"

In a world of doom and gloom the young Royals are a breath of fresh air. Anyone agree? Plus cute babies, we love cute babies.

Teacher Gifts

With Christmas just around the corner (actually 70 days to be exact), I’ve just begun the teacher gift brainstorm. There are so many cool ideas out there. If you type ‘teacher gifts’ into google there are 426 MILLION results! Each year I have tried to do something different and tried to be really inventive but it’s getting harder and harder!

It’s particularly hard for daycares and preschools because they have multiple teachers. Personally hampers have always worked for this and been well received. They can feast as they celebrate not having to see our kids everyday for a little while!

So let’s help each other out. What have you done in the past? Or are you a teacher that has received an unforgettable gift and want to share what it was?

Living in a family member's shadow

hbz-princess-eugenie-wedding-fergie-gettyimages-1051950026.jpg

Imagine how it would feel to have waited and waited for your big day (your wedding), have it arrive and then have another family member steal your limelight by announcing that they’re pregnant on your day? Then imagine that the family members I’m referring to are none other than Harry and Meghan? Poor old Eugenie…

Harry and Meghan are said to have shared their baby news with the royal family on the day that Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank, and let me tell you Fergie wasn’t happy! Through a couple of tweets about her daughter’s wedding at the exact moment of the royal baby announcement, it is pretty clear she isn’t happy about the timing.

So, are you in the shadows of a family member, or perhaps are you the one in the spotlight?

A MAGICAL DISNEY BRUNCH

Disney.jpg

Ok this made NHM Mummas a little excited. A huge Disney inspired boozy sing a long party is coming to Australia and of course it's fancy dress! So if you feel inspired enough to catch a train down to Sydney this could be for you.

Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, there was a Disney-themed bottomless brunch…

Disney fans, rejoice! Because whether you’re a wannabe Little Mermaid or a regular Prince Charming, you’re invited to an afternoon of bottomless brunching with an (utterly unofficial) Disney twist.

If you take a pumpkin-turned-carriage, you’ll find the bottomless brunch fit for a princess. Guests will 2 hours of unlimited mimosa, champagne or beer alongside a classic brunch menu served fairy tale-style.

Magical attendees are 100% encouraged, and there’ll also be themed entertainment, and plenty of opportunities to show off your best Cinderella twirls on the dance floor.

Tickets are extremely limited, register your interest here.

FOOD MY KIDS LOVE BUT I THOUGHT THEY'D HATE

Green_Curry_Chicken_7.jpg

So the strangest thing happened. I felt like eating adult food and couldn’t stand another night of ‘kids food’ so I cooked sausages for the kids and green prawn curry with quinoa for myself and daddy. Admittedly my partner doesn’t like too much green curry paste so I didn’t overdo it. Then my two year old said ‘I have some mummy?’, it’s always entertaining watching her reaction to new food so I thought why not? Turns out she loved it and ate a whole bowl. I was completely flabbergasted. So we asked NHM Mummas what recipes did you think your kid’s would hate but they actually loved?

  • Chilli Chicken

  • Salmon smoked or panfried

  • Salt and Pepper Squid

  • Tuna

  • Curried Chicken

Rebecca McPherson

  • Mexican hot chocolate made from organic dark chocolate but with Chillies/ vanilla etc in it also. For some reason my children absolutely love it. It is warming but energising all at the same.

MEGA CREATURES

The second week of the holidays, OMG can you believe it! The highlight of our holiday was always going to be Mega Creatures. We grabbed my mum and headed out to Hunter Valley Gardens today to see the gigantic beasts on display. Seriously, what would we do without the gardens? Between snow time, mega creatures, storybook gardens and the amazing Christmas lights, it is a venue my family absolutely adores. They do everything right. Kids can roam free, without parents stressing about impending dangers. You can bring a packed lunch or buy one. And seriously, how close is it to Newcastle? It took us 30 minutes to get there. It was honestly a fantastic day out!

Halloween Down Under

images-3.jpeg

Walking through Coles this morning the kids and I stopped in front of giant pumpkins and they wanted to buy it so I could carve it for them for Halloween. Um sorry no. This is one fad I don’t need to get behind thanks! I can assure you I’d be injuring myself carving something like a pumpkin. Cutting butternut pumpkin for dinner is honestly bad enough.

Last year, we kind of got behind the hysteria. We dressed up in costumes we had at home and walked around with a group of school friends and collected lollies. It seriously just doesn’t sit right with me. Here we are, telling our kids not to talk to strangers, yet one day a year we encourage them to knock on their doors and collect food off them. Call me paranoid, but when our strawberries are laced with needles, what really could go wrong?!

I’m interested to hear other people’s opinions on Halloween though. I’ll probably still let the kids dress up but I’d prefer given that it’s the end of October to start concentrating on the Christmas season. Because who doesn’t love Christmas!?

Our bullying epidemic

I was horrified to hear of the recent story of the young girl tortured by a group of teenagers and then thrown off a bridge. These were her friends at one stage, in fact one had been romantically involved with her at one stage. Horrifying and incredibly scary stuff. So I did a quick google search into bullying and was even more horrified to read just how young our children are experiencing bullying. One report suggested bullying in preschool years!

One in 4 Australian kids experiences bullying at school so unfortunately if your child does experience bullying they are definitely not alone.

images-2.jpeg

It’s important to be able to recognise the signs that your child is being bullied. These can include:

  • cuts, marks and bruises

  • withdrawal from activities

  • losing items at school

  • feelings of stress and anxiety

  • avoidance of school

  • ripped clothes

  • loss or increase in appetite

  • friendship breakups

  • loss of sleep

So what can you do?

It’s important to keep the lines of communication as open as possible. Ask them directly if they are being bullied and try to work together to help prevent it. Try to relate to them as much as possible, this could mean talking about your own experiences. Encourage them to talk to someone else. Kids Helpline have great resources and is a safe place for kids to call to chat.

TAMPON TAX ABOLISHED, PERIOD

According to my incredible sources (the internet) tampons were used as early as 15th century BCE, back then they were made of wool. Ancient Japanese ladies used them too but they were made out of paper and the Hawaiian ladies used a type of fern.

We still use them today but we were paying a luxury tax on them to date because I know next to my Longchamp bag and my Cartier diamonds my tampons are at the top of the ‘luxurious things I own’ list.

Anyway even though the Government was making $30 million-a-year out of it they’ve let it go. It’s the end, period.
